Overnight I-5 Lane and Height Restrictions Begin Tonight, Running Through Halloween

Starting tonight, August 28, overnight construction restrictions begin on I-5 northbound through Portland, affecting drivers coming from Beaverton, Gresham, Lake Oswego, West Linn, and the Clackamas area on their way north.

Between roughly milepost 302.98 and 303.45, the northbound lanes narrow to 14 feet wide, and at milepost 303.15 there's a height restriction of 15 feet 7 inches — anyone hauling something taller needs a different route or a heads-up call to ODOT's Over-Dimension Permit Unit. The restrictions run late nights only: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, with slightly longer windows Friday and Saturday nights.

The work is scheduled to continue through October 31, so this isn't a one-night inconvenience — it's worth building into travel plans for anyone making a late-night or early-morning run up I-5 over the next two months, especially with Oregon State Fair traffic starting this weekend adding extra cars to the corridor.

Daytime commutes aren't affected, so the restrictions mostly matter for late finishes, early flights out of PDX, or anyone driving something tall or wide. Check ODOT's TripCheck before a late-night drive if you're not sure your route is affected.
