Lloyd Center Closes for Good After 66 Years, Ending an Era for Portland-Area Shoppers

After 66 years, Lloyd Center closed its doors for the last time on Saturday, August 8. Thousands of people turned out across the Northeast Portland mall's final weekend to mark the end of a shopping destination that, for generations of families across Beaverton, Gresham, Lake Oswego, West Linn, and the Clackamas area, meant the same thing: a trip to Lloyd Center.

When it opened in 1960, Lloyd Center was the largest shopping center in the United States, drawing shoppers from across the Portland metro area with its open-air design, department store anchors, and a full-size ice rink that became one of its signature features. Over the following decades it evolved through multiple renovations — enclosing the mall in the late 1990s, then reopening its central atrium to the sky again in recent years — while remaining a regional gathering point through changing retail trends.

In its final chapter, Lloyd Center had reinvented itself again as a home for independent businesses, local artists, and community groups, a shift organizers leaned into for the send-off. The closing weekend's "Lloyd Center Forever" celebration included Lloyderpalooza, an open vendor fair featuring local makers; Lloyd Fest, an afternoon of live music, DJs, poetry readings, and karaoke in the food court; a collaborative community mural inviting visitors to share their memories of the mall; a silent disco walk through the halls; a bike ride; a magic show; and one last public skate at the historic ice rink.

The building is now slated for demolition to make way for a mixed-use housing development, part of a broader redevelopment plan for the Lloyd District first announced earlier this year. For now, the site marks the close of a 60-plus-year run as one of the Portland region's most recognizable landmarks — one that many suburban families reached not by living nearby, but by making the drive in, the same way they might for a rare special outing.
